In Turku, between the Aura River and Porthan Park, stands a magnificent pavilion building that has been there since 1848, known to locals as Pinella. Here, Elias Lönnrot, J. L. Runeberg, and Sakari Topelius themselves have spent evenings. According to stories, even during Prohibition, evenings at Pinella continued with hidden bottles of spirits tucked in the columns. With a history spanning over a century, the building is one of Finland’s oldest restaurant locations. Today, under the shelter of its columns glows an Italian, hand-built Valoriani oven, continuing traditions in a new way: by serving Neapolitan pizza. Via Tribunali brings a new chapter to the historic Pinella pavilion. The restaurant proudly continues Pinella’s rich and colorful history, adding a touch of Italian craftsmanship. At the heart of Via Tribunali is a Neapolitan pizza oven, a massive two-ton structure heated with an open fire to over 450°C. The oven is igloo-shaped: the opening is low and the roof is domed. This design preserves heat and circulates it evenly. The pizzas bake quickly, in just 60 seconds, which keeps the toppings juicy and the crust perfectly airy. At Via Tribunali, pizza-making follows Neapolitan traditions that are over 200 years old. These traditions are repeated exactly the same way every time, without exception. One taste and you’ll understand why. Via Tribunali is certified by the Neapolitan pizza governing body, Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana. Outside Italy, there are only about 400 certified restaurants. Through strict criteria, the organization ensures that the traditions of the world’s most authentic and flavorful pizza are preserved even here in the far north. And rightly so, because nothing beats Neapolitan pizza! Via Tribunali’s menu includes a wide selection of classics such as Margherita, Con Salame, and Diavola. The menu also offers trendier twists for those who have already sampled the classics. All pizzas are made by hand from the finest Italian ingredients: Cesola flour, San Marzano tomatoes, and deliciously soft mozzarella cheese. The toppings are chosen to complement each other, so no single flavor dominates. Neapolitan pizza is certainly not heavy fast food; instead, the focus is on creating delicious flavor with harmonious toppings, while the airy base forms the foundation of the taste experience. Table reservations at Via Tribunali Turku are accepted for both the dining hall and the vaulted cellar.
