Restaurant Kummisetä – A Reborn Classic in Kuopio’s Dining Scene Kummisetä was founded in the year of grace 1989 by a pair of brothers whose vision was to recreate the warm, welcoming feeling they experienced when visiting their own godfather. It was meant to be a place where life is enjoyed around the same table—whether in a large group or just a few close friends. This core idea has been cherished for over three decades, with each new owner adding their own touch to the legacy. Throughout its existence, the restaurant has been widely recognized as a cornerstone of Kuopio’s culinary scene and as a high-quality establishment. Today, it holds an esteemed status as a true classic within Finnish restaurant culture. A Historic Setting The building that houses Kummisetä dates back to the 1850s, when the wooden section was originally built as an official residence for the local bridge overseer. In 1912, a stone building was added alongside it, which later served as a home for the blind starting in 1956. It was converted into a restaurant in the late 1980s by brothers Juha and Sami Torvinen, and that bold move marked the beginning of the enduring story of Kummisetä.
